OPEN BURNING

 A permit shall be obtained from the Fire Code Official prior to kindling a fire for recognized silvicultural or range or wildlife management practices, prevention or control of disease or pests, or a bonfire. Application for such approval shall only be presented by and permits issued to the owner of the land upon which the fire is to be kindled.

The purpose for open burning shall be for one of the following:

  1. To prevent or abate a fire hazard, when approved by the PA. Department of Environmental Protection and when set by or under the supervision of a public officer.
  2. To instruct personnel in firefighting when approved by the PA. Department of Environmental Protection.
  3. To prevent and control disease or pests when approved by the PA. Department of Environmental Protection.
  4. For purposes solely recreational or ceremonial or for the sole purpose of cooking food.
  5. To burn in conjunction with the production of agricultural commodities in there manufactured state on the premises of the farm operation.

In accordance with PA State Act 101 all open burning of leaf waste and recyclable materials are prohibited throughout Lower Swatara Township . Leaf waste is defined as: leaves, garden residues, shrubbery, tree trimmings and similar materials.
